In a discussion today on the way back from a band competition, I was sitting with a friend and we were talking with another guy. I forget how we got on the topic, but the discussion led to God and the Bible. The guy, let's call him Phil, said that he believed in God, but thought that the Bible should only be taken metaphorically and that to try to press your views upon everyone else is wrong. He insisted that people who grew up and were taught to follow the Bible were simply brainwashed.
Phil and I did come to an agreement about faith and religion. Religion is dead, there is little that is redeeming or fulfilling about religion because it has no depth; however, faith is alive. Faith tempers the concept of God into a relationship that has intensity and meaning. I don't know that my friend and I made any progress, but I hope we watered the seed that I know is planted in his heart.
What would you have done in my place? I'm wondering what would have been the wisest thing to do.
